It’s what happens after the day shift is done that matters
During the day my brain is soaking in ideas. The colour of a client's shirt is the perfect shade of grey. The light spills over the wall and shadows fall across the floor. The curves of my wife getting dressed. The people on the street going about their life.
Everyday stuff informs my art, nothing fancy. All day the colours and textures build up in my brain, and when I get to the studio it all spills out onto the canvas or paper. It's not something I can contain or hold back. The lines appear then the colours and shapes follow.
My art is an expression of our world. It's a connection to our everyday selves, stripping away all the noise and reimagining what we see. My goal is to create an optional slice of life, a respite from how we view our reality. My ambition is to spark a new conversation or perspective on life as we know it. Our views don't have to agree, in fact that's what I like best! A different opinion, a chance to chat, a moment to reflect and share.
I'll use charcoal and watercolour on handmade paper to capture the essence of the subject. Simplicity and natural elements to focus attention on the moment. Absence of details in these works allow the viewer to see themselves in the frame.Big bold shapes and colours in acrylic on canvas create some fun and energy.
The subjects have their stories to tell, and my job is to give them the stage. These iconic pieces create plenty of conversation. I recommend serving them with good wine, great food and your favourite friends.Oils are where my story started, they remain a rich part of my practise. Working in oils takes time and allows me to reach deeper into the work. Often taking me to a darker place, or releasing a story that needs to be told.
Find me on instagram and let me know which piece made you stop and think, or made you smile.
